Manager’s Induction

What is it?

The Manager’s Induction is a set of standards, produced by Skills for Care, which sets out what a new manager needs to know, understand and be able to do within the first six months of a new management role.

Who is it for?

  1. It is for all new managers of adult social care
  2. Existing managers can use them for their own CPD
  3. Organisations can use them to develop their management staff
  4. Aspiring managers can use them to help plan an appropriate development programme

What does it involve?

There are six standards, each one covering a number of linked areas, and with specific outcomes listed for each area:

Standard 1   Understanding the importance of promoting social care principles and values

Standard 2   Providing direction and facilitating change

Standard 3   Working with people

Standard 4   Using resources

Standard 5   Achieving outcomes

Standard 6   Managing self and personal skills

Individuals need to collect evidence in a portfolio in order to confirm their competence in each area and to demonstrate how they have achieved the outcomes. The portfolio does not need to be signed off, but it is proof for an inspector of the competence and understanding of a manager.

Is there a certificate at the end of it?

This is not an accredited qualification which can be obtained through an approved awarding body. However, in the standards there is a Certificate of Completion and it is envisaged that this should be signed off by a new manager’s mentor. A signed certificate is eligible for TSI funding.

Does it link to national occupational standards?

Portfolio evidence may contribute towards the Leadership and Management for Care Services qualification and evidence outcomes in the Induction Standards have been mapped to it.

Which training course should I choose?

Your choice of training support depends on your preferred learning style. The range includes:

  • An in-depth training programme which takes place over a number of dates and involves the writing of assignments. Such courses are usually integrated into the LMC qualification (e.g. courses run by Paragon and the University of Winchester; contact details are on the NVQ Courses/Providers page of the website)
  • A half day’s introduction to the standards, offered currently by Hampshire County Council via PACT (contact details are on the Training Calendars page of the website)
  • In-house training, making use of the resources available online from the Skills for Care website (contact details are available on the Useful Links page of the website).
